Partnering with local neighborhoods to feed thousands...
The storehouse is not a building, it is an idea that in order to better serve our community we need to work together to get the surplus resources out of storage and into the hands of people that can put them to use. It is the strength of the network of volunteers based in each community that make this program possible. In 2006 Lighthouse Inc. partnered with 10 neighborhoods to distribute over 24,000 cases of food at a total In Kind value of $978,040. We did this with 9,000 hours of volunteer labor from the communities. On a budget of $40,000.
Our Focus
Lighthouse Inc. has always worked to be efficient in order to maximize our success. The storehouse program works to deliver the most food possible, in the shortest amount of time, to as many low income seniors and families. We do not store our food, but deliver it to our network of neighborhood partners at ten sites in one day. A crew of 5 delivery workers and a team of about 100 volunteers distribute 25,000 pounds of food from a warehouse in the morning and have it broken down into to bags of groceries that are distributed in each community within hours. By the end of the day, the truck is empty and the food is in the homes of low income families.
“Working Together to Feed Thousands”
In 2006, Lighthouse served 10 primary areas. We partnered with 43 neighborhoods and the PAC to share Thanksgiving and Christmas with over 4,000 neighbors. The cost of the food was over $9,000.00, but the amount of love and care that went into the meals is priceless. It is our hope to extend our deliveries to more neighborhoods that have a need. We rely on In-Kind donations and are always looking for new sources to meet the growing needs. We average 18,000 pounds of food delivered each month.
